website size question

I'm working on a site for a friend and I have gone in and compressed all
the images and tried my best to clean up the site. When I run a report
on the site the total size is 89.1 megs (I also get this when I right
click on the web folder and get the properties.) But when I publish to
the server it fills up at 99.9 megs before the site has even gotten 3/4
of the way published. If I wipe all my files off the server then it
has something like .53 megs of used space, so why can't I publish?

Forgot to add that this was the first time publish to a new and empty
server.
