the program i had used (windows media center) does not have a record option

How can Vista become corrupted? Maybe, you installed something that took
Vista out that was non Vista compliant, which I did do that on the HP dv9000
today. Maybe, you could have restored the O/S to a previous restore point
that was good to solve the issue, without having to reinstall Vista.

Anyway, you have a 1 yr software support from HP, if you have not upgraded
the Vista O/S. You have 180 days of support from MS for Vista and MS
products running on Vista. You can call MS for support or HP.

MS does not provide support for OEM installations.

I have a dv9000 also, you can find the updated webcam drivers on the hp site
under software and drivers for the dv9000. For some reason mine just stopped
working one day. I installed the updated drivers and it is workng fine now.
As for Vista I have no problems with my dv9000. Spectacular performance and
reliability.
