Web Site Causes Drop!

Hi folks,

I have been wrestling with an odd problem of dropouts on my Laptop using
a wireless connection.

I have a new router, replaced a few days ago, and an older wireless
card. They both work fine for just about everything except one
particular site. I have determined (and I can do this every time) that
when I go to this site, play a movie ON THE LAPTOP, my wireless
connection drops out and my desktop (wired to the router) also drops out!

I have to unplug and replug the router to get everything back and running!

This does not happen at the desktop, that is going to the site and
playing a movie file does not cause a dropout, only going to that URL
and playing any movie from that site on the laptop does this.

Here's the URL - it is from a site that has lots of "funny" movies, you
know, everything from Letterman's show the other night with O'Reilly, to
the Christmas House light show, to X rated stuff too.

http://www.ifilm.com/top100/tvclips

I originally got the URL for the Christmas light movie that I'm sure
most of you have seen - it worked fine on the desktop but going to the
laptop caused these weird problems.

Can anyone explain why my laptop crashes my router? If so, is there some
setting that is out of whack on the LT?

Thanks, Fred

Fred,

When you play this movie on the desktop computer, is the desktop using WiFi? Or
is that just the laptop?

WiFi is a very effort intensive protocol - as is running streaming content like
high bandwidth movies. And I've seen the Christmas House light show, and I know
what a strain it could be on a router running WiFi (except being as my bandwidth
truly sux, my performance is throttled before it enters my house).

My guess is that your router can't handle the strain. Whether this is a total
hardware limitation (and therefore permanent), or if it's related to firmware,
is a matter to be discovered.
# See if there's a firmware upgrade available. Check for both the WiFi card and
for the router. Upgrade and test one only at a time.
# Consider replacing the WiFi card to one possibly more compatible with the
router (same make and similar model if possible).
# Contact the router vendor and ask for support.

Hi Chuck,

The desktop is connected w/RJ45 to Port #1 and only the LT uses WiFi.

Other sites using movies and other video streams play fine and with no
problems - it is just that site, specifically!

The Router is a Netgear WGR614 and the Card is a Netgear WR511 and both
have been updated to latest firmware.

I've even received the Christmas Lights show via wireless email from a
friend and it streams fine - but that and other stuff from that site
causes the problem.

Thanks for your help, Fred
