Hi,

I have XP Professional installed running IIS 5.1

I have a web site running locally and can access this site locally and
remotely using a user name and password. Where do I go in the
configuration to permit public access to this same site, or do I have to
run a separate web server application that is not tied into the
operating system. e.g. the users do not have an account on the host
computer.

Thanks.

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Internet Information Services.
Rigtht click on the Default web site, or directory of the web site and
select Properties. Then go to the Directory Security tab and enable
Anonymous access.

HI,

That I have done so. It was the first thing I did. It still will not
permit anonymous access. I do have the guest account enabled. I get
the following:

Hi Doug,

I had deleted the ISUR_<> account some years back when I was running a
private web site. Your suggestion pointed out to me that this account
was necessary, so I have replaced it. Now I do not get the unauthorized
screen, a 401 error, but I simply get "Logon failure: user not allowed
to log on to this computer." I went and set permissions in Windows
Explorer to grant access to the ISUR_<> account. Still no joy.

Stewart,

You may want to remove and reinstall IIS, and let it create the account for
you automatically. That way it should be set up correctly.

Hi Doug,

Yes, that was my conclusion too. Although, I am getting low on drive
space, only 10gig left on the web server, so I think I will also replace
the drive and start from scratch. Not being able to run the IIS
lockdown tool for fear of locking myself out of the system is one of the
major issues I need to rectify. I think a clean install will save me
many hours of fiddling. May also solve some other non web site issues
too. Thanks for your input. It was appreciated.
