can anyone recommend some good, preferably free, tools for anonymous
internet surfing? thanks.

Anonymity is a bit dubious, as everything can eventually be traced back to
you. The question is whether or not "the authorities" are willing to search
through server proxy records, which depends upon what you've been up to
online, and whether or not it is worth their time and effort.

That being said, if you are looking to go to a website and read something
without having the website know your IP, using a proxy server works. There
are lists (google for them) of proxy servers; just punch one in (for
MSWindows - internet options, connections, LAN settings) and everything you
do "looks like" it is coming from that proxy server. Note: some proxy
servers work better than others, and you might have to try several to find
one you like. There's also http://www.proxify.com which does much the same
thing, but through a web interface.
