I have IE ver 6.0.2800.1106xxxxx (as you can see I just
checked) but many pages I go to say "you need IE 5.0 or
higher to browse"

What gives?

Go here and look right at the bottom of the page.

www.tames.net

It should say something like

You are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows
NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

If you are using a pop up stopper or ad blocking software it may be sending
a wrong message to the various web servers. If that's the case there should
be a setting in the options controlling what is sent.

In any case if it reports something different (the MSIE 6.0 is the important
part) that should help diagnose the problem.
