Using Windows XP SP3 Internet Explorer 8. When I try to open (www.txu.com)

Try running IE8 with no add-ons. If it works then, one of your add-ons is
bad. Also try with an alternate browser like Firefox.

MS webpage explaining add-ons: http://tinyurl.com/2tro8f

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Do you take cookies? The page wants to give you some.

Thank you all but no help so far....

One of the respondents suggested changing browsers, and you'd be surprised
how much of your time that would have saved.

One of the neat things a browser can do, is offer you the option to
"View Source". That allows you to examine the HTML code they're sending
from the web site. It shows up as a page of very badly written text.

I tried this, and you're probably thinking "now he's going to go all
geek on me" :) Guess what I found in the source. The following message...

"Attention Internet Explorer Version 8 Users
TXU.com was designed to be best viewed by Microsoft Internet Explorer
versions 6.0 and 7.0 and Firefox version 3.0. We've detected that you
are using Internet Explorer Version 8.0. To ensure this website
functions properly, please turn on the Compatibility View mode
on your browser. Simply go to the Internet Explorer menu at the top
of your page and select Tools and then click the Compatibility View
to display the website as viewed in IE 7."

I don't know how you were supposed to see that, but they knew there
was a problem.

That has nothing to do with his problem. His problem is that
www.txu.com will not open.

How is it not OP's problem? OP is using IE8, and www.txu.com advises those
users to "turn on Compatibility View mode on your browser".

Granted, if OP can't open the source of the page to see the note it isn't
much good to him but just the fact that the source includes the advisory
indicates to me that the use of IE8 is creating a problem for him.

I have IE8. Compatibilty mode only changes the image you see on your
display. It has nothing to do with site access.
I can access the site whether compatibility mode is on or off.

Also; on the failing system have you checked internet options, security tab
and verified it is not listed in
restricted sites?

Did you check if is listed in restricted sites under security tab? When
using IE what is the message when attempting to
go to TXU.com?

Herb, Any resolution on the issue last year? I am experiencing the
same problem. Although, for all the rest of the folks who posted
here, "Unknown" is the only one who correctly understood the problem.
I can use ANY browser, ANY version, WITH or WITHOUT add-ons, all with
the same result. I've cleared cache and cookies. FF/IE8/Chrome
don't work for me. However, two feet away on my desktop, TXU.com
will open in any/all the same browser versions.

Makes no sense.

Rename the HOSTS file to HOSTS.SAV.

Try these for no good reason:

1. Open Internet Options, Connections tab, click "Lan Settings" button,
deselect all.

2. Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type CMD and click the [OK] button. Type each of the
following:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /release [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /renew [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /registerdns [Press Enter key]

3. NETSH

Click Start, Run, type CMD and click the [OK] button. Type the following:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

What hosts file??

There's only one.

It's found here:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS

See the paragraph "Internet Resource Blocking" at this entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

Bottom line:
An entry in the HOSTS file containing a specific IP address will prevent
anything from that IP address from being processed by your computer.

You can look at it, or modify its contents, using Notepad or any text
editor.
