Web page frames?

G

Guest

Recently I've noticed that when I move my mouse (MS Intellimouse Explorer)
around a web page a frame or border will appear around the section of the
page that the mouse curser in in. If I try to click on a link or active
content, I first have to click the framed section and then the link.
Previously I could just click a link one time. Is there a setting in IE6
that somehow got changed or is this a mouse issue?

Any advice appreciated.

Probably a mouse issue.
Have you tried Control Panel-Mouse-Activities tab to see if you have
accidentally enabled ClickLock?

Hi Ed :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, but, if Alan's suggestion does
not work, try the following as it may apply to your OS and see if it helps:

You might also try updating the mouse driver. Check in the Control
Panel>Mouse>Hardware> Properties>Driver tab and click the Update tab to
check for driver updates. You may have to be logged on in the Admin
account.

If you are using the USB connection, try using a corded, regular plug in
mouse.

If still no joy, try uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse and see if that
helps.

Hope this helps.

My Windows version is XP Home (SP2). I have the latest Intellipoint driver
installed. Click lock is not enabled.

One addtional point I noticed this evening is that when the mouse pointer is
within a "frame" on a web page, the mouse cursor changes into a hand pointer
and a small dialogue box appears that says "click to activate this control".
I don't know what control it is referring to however.

I just thought I'd mention this before I uninstall / reinstall the mouse.

Thanks for your help.

Obviously there is something in that area that is or a link, perhaps a
redirect to anther page or website. Please post the link to the website
that you are having the problem with and we will see how it reacts. It could
be legitimate, or perhaps not.

I have a cordless Click mouse, so perhaps it may react similar.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ed :)
Hi Jan,

I happens on a lot of web pages. Try this one for instance:

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/default.asp?siteid=mktw

I have visited the about website, and saw nothing out of the ordinary. My
cursor turned into the pointing finger when it crossed over indicated links.
I saw no borders or frames as you described, and no message balloons, dialog
boxes or other sucn text.

At this point, I suspect there is some form of scumware on your system,
perhaps adware, spyware, or a Trojan. I recommend that you work through the
infomation below, following the instructions carefully. Be aware, your
Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware, worms, etc.,
and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such as AdAware and
SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must also be run in
Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan all files. Even
if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does not mean your
system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean your machine.

Jan, First of all, I want to thank you for your help. Before following
your suggestion regarding HiJack This, I Googled the exact words in the
dialog box that pops up "Click to activate and use this control". I got
several hits and it appears to be some kind of change that Microsoft to
ActiveX contols to prevent certain processes to start when a user clicks on a
web page. That's a really crude description but the web site (below)
provides a much more complete explanation. It sounds like this dialog box is
there to stay which is fine with me. I'm just happy I don't have a trojan or
scumware lurking inside my machine.

Again, thanks very much for your help.
