Web Login Problem....

I have a small LAN with a number of users. One of the users is
attempting to process Financial information via the ScotiaBank web
site. The login is via https.

On one computer, no problem. On the other computer, clicking the
"login" button causes a "page cannot be displayed error" ALWAYS.

This is pretty frustrating. Both computers are WinXP Pro. Both are
running SP2. Both have all the latest patches and updates.

Any suggestions??

Put the bank site in the Trusted zone. Be sure it requires
the HTTPS...

It is the bank's own web site which directs us to the HTTPS site.

I tried "trusted" zone, but it made no difference.

I have determined what I think MAY be the cause though!

The bank has a "test" link. On the machine that works, it says that
"MS VM" is "Working. On the machine that does not work, it says that
MS VM is "disabled".

Some testing and checking revealed that the troubled computer has
Sun's latest Java 1.5.1 installed!

Since all attempts to obtain Java files from MS lead right back to the
Sun web site, and since Java is definitely working on other web sites,
I am taking the position that the problem is with the Scotia Bank web
site. Their secure application is NOT compliant with the current
version of Java - which is from Sun (NOT Micro$haft!)

This is how the incident will be reported to them. Basically, if they
don't buck-up and start supporting the current version of Java, they
are soon going to have quite a few ticked users on their hands - or so
it seems.

Will keep you all advised.

OK, problem identified and "patched".

The Bank of Nova Scotia has "ScotiaConnect" for buiness banking. This
web based banking system uses https and javascripts to control the
entry into secured areas. Fair enough.

The problem is really with Scotia Bank's application. Their
application requires Microsoft Virtual Machine (MS Java).

The machine that was having problems had been completely "rebuilt" in
the last couple of months. All of the latest and greatest service
packs and patches had been loaded - including SUN Java!

Research into the problem revealed that MS Virtual Machine was NOT
included on WinXP, XP SP1, or SP2! The machine in quesiton was rebuilt
using WinXP Pro SP1, and then had SP2 applied.

When I went to the command prompt and typed "jview", I got a message
to the effect that the "class" was not even registered. Basically, MS
Virtual Machine was NOT installed.

A test link from Scotia Bank's web site confirmed that Virtual Machine
was listed as "OFF". Even though all of the web-based tests I ran said
"JAVA" was working, Scotia Bank REQUIRES MS Virtual Machine ONLY! :(

Then the fun began, because MS no longer offers Virtual Machine for
download! They do offer some "patches" for those who already have VM
installed, but NOT the FULL version!

It took some digging, but I found a web site where I could download
the FULL MS VM 5.00.3805, and then another site which had the 3810
update. After these were installed, the Scotia Bank web site began
functioning.

I have e-mailed Scotia Bank and advised them of the problem, but have
not received any respose yet (it has only been 24 hours).

To anyone who has this problem, you better get those files downloaded
fast! In my quest, LOTS of links are already dead, and the situation
is only going to get worse. :(

I am hoping that Scotia Bank will fix their web application, but I am
NOT holding my breath.

Hope that helps others!
