Here is the issue:

I direct FP(03) to "open site" with the intention of editing site on the
server "live".

I have no problems, then out of the blue, when I go to save the latest
change, there is a long wait time and further inspection discovers that FP is
not responding.
After the hourglass disappears, all the images are not viewable (as if two
users are on the site at the same time), and there is an unwanted folder
saved on my desktop.
To be clear, the images are viewable through a browser, just not in FP.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be occurring? I contacted my
Host and there are not issues with the server. ( or so I'm told)

hmmmm, what's in the unwanted folder? temp files? are you mistakenly trying to publish to a folder on your desktop?

need more info...describe how you are trying to publish to your online server.

I hope this doesn't come across as a cross-post. I was working on the site
"live" and apparently FP decided to save a file to one of my desktop folders.

Don't work live.
Where you trying to edit an image? (just curious).

You're much safer working locally then Publishing to the server...much.

No I wasn't working specifically on any one item, actually I was adding text.
Since our post are taking their time, I checked reports and have discovered
a large amount of broken links. I wonder if this new issue is connected
somehow?
