Salford,

Are you running an Instant Messaging program (AOL, MSN / Windows, Yahoo
Messenger, etc)? Do you or the other person have a NAT router connecting the
computer to the internet? Using IM with audio / video, and with NAT routers, is
a very challenging task.

You will likely find more expertise in the microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger
newsgroup, or
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/....mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger>.

Salford,

Are you trying to get the webcam audio / video working under AIM / MSN / Windows
/ Yahoo Messenger?

Firewalls can indeed stop you. Windows Firewall, for instance, has to be
configured for the Messenger program you're using.

NAT routers can also stop you.
<hometoys.com/htinews/aug01/articles/microsoft/upnp.htm>

Depending upon what IM program you're using, audio, video, text, file transfer,
etc are all separate functions. One or all functions may work (or not),
depending upon your network.

Please provide some detail about your system, network layout (router make and
model please), operating system, and IM client.

Salford,

That's the tough question of the day. What firewall do you have?

I have Windows Firewall (XP SP2). I (or WF acting automatically) opened an
exception named "MSN Messenger", and a second one "Microsoft DirectPlay Voice
Test" (the latter one I think was opened by the Audio/Video Tuning Wizard).

If your firewall is application aware (like WF) you'll need to specify the
application by name. Or, you may have to list the ports needed.

Are you behind a NAT router? I have a Linksys BEFSX41, that's UPnP compliant.
If you have a NAT router that's not UPnP compliant, you'll have to manually open
ports.

For further details on what ports to open, you need to post in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/....mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger>.

Salford,

The various IM functions like audio / video (webcam) require your IM client to
listen on certain ports. With your computer listening for remote computers to
connect, it is at risk. Most firewalls will indeed block this behaviour unless
otherwise configured. Audio and video work differently, so it should not
surprise you if one works but not the other.

What operating system (name, version, service pack) are you running? How does
your computer connect to the internet (what network devices like modem or router
- and include make and model please)? What firewall are you running?

thanks for your help. i have disconnected my firewall in network connections
on my net connecter and on my wan adapter and i now can use my audio on my
web cam thanks salford

Salford,

It's good that your webcam now works - at least you know what can be done to
make it work. But please don't make disconnecting your firewall a final step.

The firewall is there to protect you. Please spend some time reading firewall
documentation, about opening the proper ports / permitting the right programs,
so you can use your webcam with the firewall running. Please don't expose
yourself to more risk than necessary.
