WDS 4 finds and previews emails, won't open them

Outlook 2003 on an XP Pro system.

WDS 4 will find emails and preview them, but double clicking on the message
will not open the email as it used to. I have reinstalled WDS 4 and
re-indexed it twice without any success.
 
After the latest round of uninstall, run windows update, reinstall WDS
something has changed.... now WDS won't index anything in Outlook 2003 at
all.
