Could installing a WD external portable passport drive cause NTLDR to
go missing?

Go missing entirely from your boot volume? Seems unlikely to me. Seems more
likely the new hardware is interfering with your boot order!

I guess I should also mention that there were no periphreals hooked up at the
time I rebooted (not even the external drive). The only thing that changed
on my system was that the external drive installed a driver when I first
plugged it in.

Some BIOS have a issue where they will automatically reconfigure the
boot order/sequence when a new & bootable type device is found. I'd
start by checking BIOS setup and see what Boot sequence is currently
setup.
