As always, WD says it is uptodate after the definition update. However,
the main screen reports the previous definition version. Had to manually
delete the previous version so as to install the new definitions.

Is it a registry entry or a file somewhere in the filesystem that is causing
this version mismatch?

A last resort might be to uninstall WD and install it again, and see
what happens. But, it appears as if that WD has gone through a cycle of
modifications after the release of version 1.1.1347.0 on 12 April 2006.
Is it possible for MS to make sure that the most uptodate version of WD
(with the latest signatures) is available for download if not on a daily
bases at least on a weekly basis?

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1372.0

As with previous update on 1 computer it installed with no problems the
second had to resort to the windows install cleaner again and manually update
! Other than minor hardware differances the 2 computers are running the same
software, with the exception of the computer that fails to update ! thats
running IE 7beta ?

The decision to have the download not include signatures is intentional.
You can grab the updates from WindowsUpdate if you search backwards from the
end of \windows\windowsupdate.log looking for .exe files. Skip the short
ones, and look for a .exe with a long URL--it'll be clear when you hit the
right one. This is the only method I know for manual updating.
