Way too slow to fully boot up

Whenever I light up my system, after the welcome screen I'll get my desktop
background, but not the rest of the desktop (taskbar,desktop shortcuts), for
what seems like an inordinate amount of time. Is my boot up sequence going
through too much booting before getting the desktop up? How do I get the
whole desktop up all at once like it used to be?

your start up pool ?

Try deleting your prefetch, Also try disabling unwanted items fro
loading at startup. You could also uninstall unwanted programs.

How long since you did some housecleaning like taking out the trash an
running the defragmenter? You might want to get rid of temporary files
cookies etc and check if the HD is fragmented. Also run chkdsk. Thes
can help improve boot times. Also see if it cud be due to insufficien
RAM

Hey thanks guys, and sorry for the lack of info. It is a stand alone laptop,
no network. It's brand new so there's not much on it, and I have 2gigs of
RAM. I've deleted the prefetch and shut down start ups and gotten rid of junk
files and no need to defrag. I haven't run chkdsk yet, but I will. Thanks
again for the feedback.

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab. Compare the
list of items that are loading at startup with the checklist at
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php to see what can be
safely removed or reconfigured, and how to do it.

If it is off, then the system is either processing something purely in
RAM, or is awaiting some external event. It's hard to come up with
some computational task that would take so long without having to at
least swap to disk (and thus light up the HD LED), so I'd start by
disconnecting all external connections; USB printers, scanners, LAN
cables, etc. plus disable any WiFi, BlueTooth etc.

If it burbles on and off in a "normal" way, and sounding like normal
activity, then I'd suspect "too much software" in the startup axis,
and use MSConfig to reversably disable this to test what it is.

If the HD LED is on the whole time, and there is either no HD seek
noise at all, or a repetitive clicking or clanking, then I'd suspect a
sick HD and processed to data recovery. Suspect this if you also get
pauses while in Windows, during which the mouse pointer does not move
and keystrokes are ignored (delayed).

If the HD LED is off, but the CD LED is on, then take out whatever CD
(or DVD) is in the drive.

PC boots up slow is because of installing too many softwares,
A lot of softwares all will start with the system, Should delete their
start procedure.
Winxp and Win2003 can run "msconfig" --"startup", delete otiose
procedure,
The Win2000 has to be arrived a registration form to carry on deletion.
