try to boot up my desktop and it stops almost imediately.windows xp starts to
load with indicator moving,then it stops,screen goes blank and monitor starts
to click with the indicator light flickering

Have you tried safe mode? Press F8 while computer boots, select safe mode,
select your account, right click desktop choose properties>settings tab>
click the troubleshoot button and follow directions pertaining to your
problem.
