Newbie

I'm a network/hardware support tech, level 3, for a large company with
world-wide presence. Due to recent restructuring, I'm being promoted, and
someone NOT in any IT department was assigned to hire my replacement.
(another level 3 network tech)

I called my replacement on the phone a couple days ago. In talking with
him, he happened to mention that he was having some problems with his own PC
at home. Long story short, he somehow goofed installing the OS, could not
fix the problem, and had to send his PC out to someone else to be repaired.

When I got off the phone, I was banging my head on my desk. My wife asked
me what was wrong. Well, nothing, except that I'm apparently living a
dilbert cartoon. :) -Newbie

That's because I deliberately nym-shifted, to protect the guilty. I
honestly wish the new guy the best of luck. And I think he's going to need
it, seeing that he's now level three network tech. In the meantime, I have
no desire to post bad things about him. I just thought the (general)
situation was pretty funny, and felt like sharing this funny story with
people who might appreciate the irony (or maybe the tragedy?) of someone
working level 3 tech support and needing someone else to fix a screwed-up
windows install. Thus the name change to newbie.

Let's hope he's a fast learner. :)

Hmm, I think I've talked to that guy once or twice... ;)

For those of us who aren't IT pros, what's the significance of "level 3?"

How did he goof installing an OS? Either you install it,
or you don't. Unless ... he tried to do it over another
OS .. like WinXP over Win98 ... ;-) .... and the pc
had all his wifes email, baby pictures, etc on it. Now
there is a fool. I don't blame him for getting it out the
door as fast as he could go. I'm about as good as a
tech can get .. and I fear those days when some stupid
stunt I've pulled takes down "our" computer. I have
so many levels of backup now, that I believe I have
more money in the backup hardware than I do in this
pc ... upon which I have hung every toy I could find
.... to include: cable TV, ATI 9800 Pro with Far Cry
running on all high settings, video capture, a sound
system that can peel paint, dvdcdrwxyzyounameit,
router, hardware firewall .... just begging to go up in
smoke and wipe the doggie and rabbit pictures all to
blazes. I'm betting that you, me, and your bud are
living proof that stupid is as stupid does.

unless this is another of the majority of people who are hired by WHO they
know and not by WHAT they know.

That usually means it's the guy who gets called when everyone else is
stumped. Or, a really experienced network tech. At least, that's the way
it works in our company. Don't know about Newbie. Dave

I do. This is a person who is supposed to fix other people's computer
problems. In fact, he is expected to be experienced enough to teach other
techs to fix other people's computer problems. It does not bode well that
he screws up his own computer and has to send it to someone else to be
repaired. But that's what happens when you ask a non-IT manager to hire a
new IT person, I guess. As someone else wrote, I hope he's a fast learner.
Oh, and if he was aware of how he goofed installing the OS, he probably
wouldn't have had to ship it out to be repaired. Basically, he couldn't
give me enough details to determine exactly how he screwed up. If I'd have
known there was a problem, I would have fixed it for him. But by the time I
was aware of the problem, he'd already shipped it out to be repaired.
