Yes, you can do all sorts of things with a watermark. Despite the appearance of
being a separate feature, a watermark is really just a picture or WordArt object
that is anchored in the header.

Double-click in the header area or choose View > Header & Footer (in Word 2007,
click Insert > Header > Edit Header) to open the header pane. Then click the
watermark to select it. Then use the controls on the Picture toolbar or the
WordArt toolbar (in Word 2007, on the Picture Tools > Format or WordArt Tools >
Format ribbon) to change the color, contrast, brightness, transparency,
location, etc.

Jay,

When I attempt to click on the watermark -- when the watermark has been
placed in the middle of the document, for instance -- there is no ability to
be able to click/select the watermark.

I'm using Word 2007, by the way.

The watermark that I'm using the needs to be significantly more transparent.

Any suggestions on how to select the watermark when it is not in the Header
and/or Footer?

Watermarks doesn't have to be inside the header (or footer), but they are
*anchored* to the header paragraph, which means that you should be able to
select the watermark once you have activated the header/footer area.

If there are other objects in front of the watermark so that you can't click
it, you can use the Select | Select Objects command on the Home ribbon tab.
