Watching DVD movie on laptop?

I have an Dell latitude with a new teac dvd rom dv-28e and an ess maestro
pci sound system in the mboard. I get an error whenever I try to watch a
dvd movie using various programs- they all say error in sound subsystem. My
sound seems to work good for everything else. Anything else I could do?
