was repair install query, now partitioning?

As I still have not found a solution to my XP crash
situation, I have had a suggestion that I partition the
drive and reinstall XP in the new bit and that means I can
copy across anything I want to keep. Is this a sensible
and viable option? If I partition what is already there,
won't I run the risk of losing whatever there is still
there? I have never needed to use partitioning except at
a very basic level before.

Any help gratefully received.

I would alsostill really appreciate some help with my
previous mail.

TIA,

CC.

It's risky; get another HDD, set it as master, the faulty as slave and then
extract what you need.
