Warranty on cards with aftermarket cooling

R

Robert McMillan

I am looking to buy a new pc soon with either an ATI 2900XT or a NVIDIA 8800
video card and it has been recommended to me that I fit an aftermarket fan
to replace the stock cooling. Does anyone know if this would void the card
warranty, or is it even necessary? Lastly does anyone have any
recommendations for aftermarket coolers?

Thanks

Robert

Yes. The answer is EVGA's Nvidia 8800's. You will not void your
lifetime warranty EVEN IF you remove the stock heatsink.

I'm still waiting on Zalmans ZF1000 8800 aftermarket cooler.
They've been dragging their heals on a US release of it for 3 months!

Actually the Nvidia 8800GTS stock cooler is pretty good and quiet. Its
only flaw is that it blows part of the hot air inside the case, but
that can be fixed with quality PVC tape, which can also be removed
again in case it breaks. I did that a week ago or so and it does not
increase card temperature, but decreases the risk of adjacent
components overheating.

Apart from that, removing a stock cooler will void your warranty,
unless the manufacturer explicitely states the opposite.

I would have to agree. I have two 8800GTX cards in a liquid cooled system
and they are very quiet and I can actually hear the waterpump hum over the
video card fans at idle. They also are not vacuum cleaners when hot either.
They are the EVGA Superclocked cards.
