Replacement fan for 8500 le?

hi. my sapphire 128 mb. 8500 le is equiped with a heatsink
and fan with an ati sticker on the fan. the fan sets down in
the heatsink and is about flush with the top of the heatsink
when all 4 small screws are in place. i like the card, it plays
back movies from my hard drive through an s-video cable to
my widescreen tv about 45 feet away. i've read the stock
fans are junk. mine is making some bad noises on start-up
that last less than a minute. i checked it over and
gave the fan a couple drops of oil where it looked ok to do so.
the noisy start-up is gone for now. does anyone know of a good
aftermarket fan that will fit in the original spot? i'm guessing
i could get another heatsink and fan and attach it to the top
of the old heatsink, or remove the old heatsink all together.
i've read the rage 3d forum and didn't find a the answer there.
anyone else find a good fan that will fit into the heatsink?
i'm open to other reasonable suggestions, but i'm not an overclocker
on a frequent basis anyways. i could probably run it without a fan...
but.. thx for any good links or model and names i can check.

hi again. with some more research i've found "vantec" iceberg copper,
all in one vga heatsink, "thermaltake" crystal orb, which is more
powerful, but its profile would block the pci slot directly below the
agp slot. the original equipment on the 8500/le i believe is an "adda" 40
mm, ap-4505mx-g 90. "vantec" is set to release a "fan card" , dual fans
on one pci card that actually blow air onto the entire video card above
in the agp slot. supposedly this will be much more effective than the
questionable "slot fans" which just pull the air form inside the machine
and aren't entirely effective cooling solution. you can find a pic of
the fan card on the vantec website. i called and they will supposedly
be available early next year. i may wait til they come out providing
my stock fan is still whirrling. any comments or suggestions are welcomed
as always. happy halloween.

A non-overclocked 8500 should be able to do without a fan in a
well-ventilated case. Most of the dedicated card coolers on your list would
be expensive overkill.

You could also replace it with a small stock fan from most any PC shop, just
take it in for a fitting ;>)

The fans from some old 486 coolers will work. In most cases the only trick
is the connector -- but you can always plug it to a standard power connector
off the card.

The fan on my 8500 AIW starting making noise on me today. (The afore
mentioned ADDA AP4505MX G90)

I yanked it out with no replacement. If the card goes all three mile island
on me, I'll report back.

hi. thanks for the info. i unplugged the 8500 fan and after 15 mins or
so it did feel sorta warm to the touch on the backside of the main chip.
i didn't measure the temp. i have a radeon 32 mb ddr that ran just fine
with just a heatsink for over 2 years. it didn't get as warm to the touch
as this 8500 does. if the fan gives out, i'll stick the 32 mb back in
until i get a fix. (no..not that kind of fix ). unless the vantec fan
card is delayed too long, is a power hog or overpriced, i think i try
it.

I need to replace my 8500, looks like one of these will do.

hi. if you are talkin about the gold colored heatsinks, i read
some negative comments about them not cooling that much. i think
it was in the rage3d discussion foroum site. i dunno if the
critic knew what he was talking about either. i'm not considering
them at this time.

hi, in the thread above i mentioned my 8500 128mb with fan and heatsink
runs hotter than my radeon 32 mb ddr (7000 series i think) with just a
heatsink. i guess i should check the temp on the 8500 with and without
the fan running. let me know if you get a temp reading on yours before
you nuke it ).
