WARNING: DELL LAPTOPS ARE BEING SHIPPED WITH KEYLOGGERS

W

wilmadockery

These f*ckers are hiding 4MB Atmel Flash chips as hardware keyloggers:

"What could this mean? I called Dell tech support about it, and they
said, and I quote, "The intregrated service tag identifier is there for
assisting customers in the event of lost or misplaced personal
information." He then hung up.

A little more research, and I found that that board spliced in between
the keyboard and the ethernet chip is little more than a Keyghost
hardware keylogger.

The reasons Dell would put this in thier laptops can only be left up to
your imagination. It would be very impractical to hand-anylze the logs,
and very CPU-intensive to do so on a computer for every person that
purchased a dell laptop. Why are these keyloggers here? I recently
almost found out."

So call back, speak to a manager, and get more info.

All models?

Can it be disabled in the system bios?

Etc.

This is a hoax. Think about the amount of storage claimed (4Mb, that's
magabits, not megabytes), the limited number of times you can write to
flash, and the speed of the PIC.

If they really wanted something like that, they'd just have put it in
the ethernet chip.

Repeat after me.... H...O...A...X..... HOAX.
Those machines come with a flat ribbon connector connecting the KB to
the MB and the KB fits snuggly into the case. There's no way on earth
you could fit that shrink wrapped wad underneath it. There are
numerous sites out there explaining that this is an absurd hoax.

The blatantly obvious fact that Dell doesn't actually make computers
nor laptops and just stamps their label on em should have been obvious
cl00 #1.

This is indeed a hoax, apparently, but there are certainly hardware
keyloggers that can hold that amount of information; 2-megabyte
keyloggers are easy to find, and if they are incorporated into the
keyboard they are undetectable (and they are always undetectable by
software, even if they are just connected to the keyboard cable).
If they really wanted something like that, they'd just have put it in
the ethernet chip.

Maybe they have. Nothing surprises me with the DHS these days.
