Flash memory in Laptops do not support large memory cards...

Isn't it time the SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller and the other
drivers for flash memory cards used in notebook computers were updated
from 2002 to 2006 to support use of the new memory cards everyone is
selling?

My case:
Gateway MX6438 AMD Turion 64 notebook, WinXP Pro SP2 updated within the
last hour. SD card is a RiData 4GB X150 formatted to FAT32 with files
stored on it by Emachines T6520 desktop, WinXP Pro SP2 updated within the
last hour.

The Gateway laptop will not even acknowledge plugging in the RiData card.
I updated the Texas Instruments PCIxx21 hardware driver after this
happened to 1.0.3.2 dated 3/15/2005, downloaded from Gateway's driver
page, but not listed as an update off the webpage automation. I got the
address from a Gateway support technician on the chat box. It doesn't
update with Gateways' driver update software, either.

Microsoft's SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller is currently
version 6.0.4069.1 dated way back in 10/1/2002, long before any flash
memory over 512KB was available, and, I suspect, the source of our
problem.

Armed with the RiData 4GB card, I toured the local computer warehouses
and kiosks to see if it was me or "them". Testing the card in 28 laptop
computers from 8 laptop manufacturers, yesterday, I found NONE OF THEM
WILL READ THESE CARDS! None of the latest available laptop computers I
tested is capable of reading the FAT32 files. About half of them saw
some kind of card plugged in, but wanted to FORMAT the card as they
didn't understand the file structure. The other half simply sat there,
dumbfounded. In some places, these high capacity cards are marketed
right next to the laptops they won't work in. One place moved the cards
away from the laptops back to the camera department as I left.

This card was read and worked fine on every desktop system we tested it
on in these same stores by these same manufacturers. At the Dell kiosk
in a local mall, the 4GB SD worked fine on a Dell photoprinter, printing
the jpeg pictures I had stored on it with ease. None of the Dell laptops
would acknowledge its presence.

Something is wrong with everybody's laptop computers, whether it's TI
lagging behind with old support chips or Microsoft lagging behind
updating the 2002 Host Controller driver in them, like mine.

I bought this 4GB SD card to expand the memory in a new Dell Axim X51v
PDA under Windows Mobile 5.1.something-or-other. Oddly enough, the
little Dell Axim WOULD read and write the card just fine. Unfortunately,
it wouldn't stay booted and running long enough to make it a useful
device and stupid Dell decided to leave out all Bluetooth support for
mobile devices like headphones, keyboards, BT printers you may find
useful out on the road, so to speak. The TODAY screen lost programs.
The "Switcher" software included had amnesia every hour, losing track of
running programs, then wouldn't reboot as Windows Mobile 5.1 lost
Switcher and refused to boot it from its GUI. WM5 PDAs need SOFT RESET
to be a button on the FRONT, not in a pinhole in the back. I returned
the defective product within the 21 day trial period for refund.
WM5/Dell Axim X51v is NOT ready for sale. How awful...another issue
entirely. Back on my old Handspring Visor Edge, it hasn't crashed in
years and the battery lasts for WEEKS, not 2.5 hours like a laptop.

Please consider an update to the 2002 SDA driver in all these notebooks
and interface with TI over their PCIxx21 and other card interfaces so we
can read 4GB SD cards and 6GB Flash cards.....

Please don't bother to tell me these cards are not compliant with some
old standard from 2000. I know that. The standard needs to keep up with
the hardware being sold. So doesn't the hardware and drivers in the
notebooks and laptops. Obviously the hardware in the desktops and the
drivers in it are different AND up-to-date with the card capacities.

Have the same problem here. My Toughbook CF-29 with built-in SD card
slot will not read 4GB+ cards. Currently, looking for a solution...
