Warning about Microsoft Word Viewer 97

First of all, this is on topic because MS Word Viewer is freeware.

I've had this little POS installed on my system for about a year now,
because a lot of people were sending me MS Word files. Unfortunately,
when you install this thing, it hijacks an association with .doc files
away from Wordpad so that if you want to edit such files, you have to
open Wordpad first and then from within it, the file. I got sick and
tired of this idiocy (and snarled at enough people about not sending
me MS Word files that they quit doing so) and uninstalled Word Viewer.
I then double clicked on a .doc file to open it, and discovered that
there was no program associated with it.

I allowed the "Open with" window to open and told it to use Wordpad to
open files of this type from now on. Then I closed the window, allowed
the system to adjust and double clicked on the filename in Windows
Explorer. The result was an error message that said something about
not being able to find "Program.exe".

Next, I went into Folder options and looked at the file types in
Windows Explorer. There was Word Viewer still listed as the program to
open .doc files. I went into advanced edit and changed it to Wordpad.
The result was Wordpad opening with an error message that included the
file path with only a partial filename.

I went back into Folder Options/File Types and edited the "Open"
command for .doc files types from:

"C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE" %1

to:

"C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE" "%1"

(not the quotation marks around the %1)

and now everything works fine.

HOWEVER!!!! This *definitely* should NEVER have happened in the first
place. There is little doubt in my mind that this bullshit was by
Microsoft design a long time ago, to convince you to buy Microsoft
Word so you could be able to edit .doc files again if you couldn't
figure out how to set things right like I did.

Now I'll be the first to admit that somebody else's experiences may be
different, but I've installed and uninstalled MS Word Viewer in W95
and on other systems, and the result is always the same. This time
however, I finally figured out what the problem was and was able to
fix the damage.

That son of a bitch is never getting back on my system again.

Thanks, John. You detailed some work I have to do for other programs that have
done exactly that, hijack file associations and then normal fixes don't work.

I could be wrong about this but I believe the "" is required when the
file-spec represented by %1 contains a space character,
e.g. "my file.doc".

WAG: Did the OP mean to write "note" rather than "not"?

Vic,
That was a typo on my part. I meant "note", not "not".
