Would it be possible to help compile a list of brands of
bad power supplies so that I and others can avoid them
(I also want to get rid of some in the machines we have)?

I know that Deer and its several brands are bad, but what
about others?

Why not just collect names of good brand power supplies instead?!??

Look on the Intel and AMD websites and see what PSU brands they OK for use
with their processors.

Any brand good enough for them is good enough for you.

Forget any brands not listed by Intel or AMD.

Good advice. Better yet, get power supply approved by BOTH Intel and
AMD. I can't believe how many people buy crappy power supplies with
an attracitve case--I'd rather have a quality power supply with an
ugly case!

The supply that came in my Premier case lost its fan after 5000 hours, then
couldn't handle a 2nd hard drive - the voltages went real low. I'm now
running an Antec 300w.

Bought a Super Power case for a PIII 850 4 years ago, runs almost 18/6, still runs today....its a crap shoot...granted that if you
buy brand name your chances are better, but its no gaurentee. I have 2 or 3 antechs in the garage busted...

While I'd never buy an unlisted brand, many bad brands approved by AMD
and Intel (every PSU that burned out in Tom's tests was AMD or Intel
approved), including Powmax (AKA Raidmax, Robanton, Leadman), and
MaxPower (Key Mouse) Powmax looks like high quality inside but is
known for not being able to put out its full rated power, and mine had
cheap JGE or JEE capacitors, one of which failed several months ago
(OK after replacement). MaxPower resembles the very cheapest PSUs,
with smaller heatsinks, smaller filter capacitors (560uF vs. 680-820uF
for most with the same 300W power rating), sloppy layout (crammed
parts, transformers crooked and sticking up), and even though they
claim to be FCC approved, mine drowned out AM radio and lower TV
channels because it didn't have an EMI filter (also helps block
surges). OTOH it probably did meet its 190W combined +3.3V and +5.0V
combined power rating, at least during the ten minutes I tested this
(load resistor ran very hot so I quit), although I tested only after I
added a second diode for the +5V output.

Get a PSU with lots of glue slopped on the big or high voltage
components and, for its power rating, a bigger than average
transformer between the two big heatsinks (Fortron/Sparkles have the
biggest -- their 300W transformers are as large as those in some 500W
PSUs). Lots of heatshrink over the wiring also seems to be a good
sign.
