I run Windows XP Professional and have a Visioneer 9120 One touch scanner.
On reboot it takes forever for the scanner to be located and loaded and
really slows down the process...especially annoying when I am having a
technical problem and have to reboot frequently. I would like to stop this
process but don't know how. The scanner is not listed in the System
Configuration Utility....that would be too easy!!
I suppose Visioneer software placed it somewhere on installation but I can't
find where. I would simply like to have control of the scanner and use it
when I need it but not on every reboot. Thanks for your thoughts.

Just a couple thoughts. One, unplug the scanner from your computer when
you don't anticipate using it this boot. Then it won't be detected.

If it still try to load software that is slow loading, you can use
Autoruns.exe from Microsoft which looks in many more places for auto
starting programs than the System Config Util. You should be able to
stop it with this -

Hardware that is connected show up in "Device Manager." "System
Configuration Utility" is used to "control" the services / auto-load
start-up applications only.

Devices do not show in the "System Configuration Utility." They show
up in Device Manager. "System Configuration Utility" (msconfig) is a
tool used to "debug" Windows start-up problems with services / auto-
start applications.
