I'd like to either build my own PC or have one built - to my specs.
However, I don't know where to start. I do know that I'd like the fastest,
most failsafe PC possible with room to stay with current technology and room
to grow (add more components). I use Photoshop a lot - so I need a good
video card. I'd also like a top grade sound card. If someone else builds
the basic PC I need, I would probably use that as a model to learn from and
go from there. Where, on the Internet, do I go to find the components and
help I need? Any suggestions would be welcome.........

Newegg.com for parts. Look at Alienware for examples of high end pc's.
Also,Maximum PC has lots of good suggestions and how-to's.

You would do better subscribing to some of the computer user magazines which
have periodic articles on assembling the various components into a computer.

I've looked at some of these and, for me, they lack the detail needed for a
newcomer (first timer) to assemble some of the components with assurety that
they won't be destroyed in the process.

For the "most failsafe PC possible", one thing you definitely
need is Chipkill ECC memory.

What's your budget?

Here's an article that appears plausible:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1825672,00.asp

It's not a high-end system, but its total price tag is less than $1700US,
including a 19" LCD monitor. You could easily make the system more
expensive: a higher-end CPU, more RAM, faster hard drives. (Western Digital
10,000 RPM Raptor SATA drives are the high speed choice at the moment for
non-SCSI drives.) I doubt that you'd need the most expensive possible
graphics card: on the consumer side, those are cards for 3D gaming, and on
the workstation side, the cards are for fast OpenGL 3D graphics for CAD. I
doubt that Photoshop is demanding by comparison.

Most of the sites I've seen that give recommendations for building high-end
systems are biased more towards gaming than Photoshop.

If you really want high-end, start with the monitor:

(Apple 30" Cinema display, 2560X1600 pixels.)

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I DON'T PLAN ON PLAYING GAMES - BUT I WANT TO GET THE HIGHEST END SOUND CARD

They're specialists in high-end workstations. After toying with their
"configurator," give them a call. They have hardware and deals that don't
show up on line. Also, the price of the system will likely be significantly
less than the sum of component prices. They built me one for less than I
could buy the parts at Monarch+Newegg...
