wake on lan

I'm looking for wake on lan software. Is there anything available through
Microsoft or any other place that can scan active MAC addresses of machines
that aren't currently on (hence have no associated IP address)? Free is
obviously best, but anything that at least has a trial version will do as I
would definately want to test it before buying it.
