I have a Dell Dimension 4550 and I am trying to get the darn thing to Wake
On LAN. I have options for PXE boot and no option for Wake on LAN however I
knwo the NIC supports it and it does turn on ok as I see the NIC lights with
it off even. Anyone have any ideas as I tried to wake it up and it does
not work

Thanks
Norman

This is more of an art than a science, at this point. I've Dells which
would WOL fine under Win98, but haven't since I upgraded them to XP.

Given that you are sure that your wake-up software is doing what it should
do--i.e. you can wake something with it on the same network--I'd work on
trying different drivers for the card. I've had the best luck going for the
newest driver from Dell's support site, but you can also go for the newest
driver from the vendors site if the nic has an identifiable vendor.

I'm not familiar with the Dimension line--so I'll have to trust your
judgement that it is WOL capable--it sounds as though it should be. Once
you get the right drivers in, it may take a power cycle before WOL is
actually enabled--strangely--it takes both bios setting and driver to make
this work--even though the driver is nowhere in evidence at the time you
invoke the feature!

Hi - This is just one of those off-the-cuff kinds of thoughts, but a lot
of NICs have a small wire that needs to be attached to the motherboard
to enable the WOL function (as well as enabling it in the BIOS).
Perhaps your Dell needs a physical connection like this, as well as the
BIOS enabling?

Good luck,

Malke
