How use Wake-on-Lan?

I have a relatively new Dell PC, using WinXP-PRO, and it has wake-on-lan on
the motherboard.

I leave my Linksys VPN router powered 'on' all the time (when I am out of
town), but would like to shut-down power on my PC (to protect from power
failures and surges as well as unauthorized access) and use the wake-on-lan
feature to turn the PC 'on' (from a laptop from my hotel) so I can use
remote access (such as remote desktop management, or just be able to
"browse" files and retrieve them)

Is there a way with this router, or in WinXP-PRO, or with another hardware
or software product that can help me EASILY use the wake-on-lan feature to
remotely turn my PC 'on' and 'off'.

(Some people have suggested getting PCAnywhere, but that seems like an
expensive way to just be able to turn a PC on and off, and browse files.

George,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxWakeOnLAN.htm.

Then you have to open the appropriate ports in your router and
have it forward these packets to the desired computer. I don't
know the port numbers, but it won't be difficult to find out.

For a test you could declare that computer the DMZ host in your
router, but that would open it entirely to the Internet, so it
is not a good long-term solution.

Thanks Hans-Georg,
I looked at this URL but it refers visitors to www.depicus.com to download
the WakeOnLanGui, however, that web site is 'page not found.' It's on the
right track though. I'm careful about downloading and executing source code
from unknown places, is there a chance that you or other newsgroup posters
might know of a resource within Windows or from a Microsoft website or a
package in a box from a "store", or some place that might be sure to work
and easy to install and setup? Thanks again, George

George,

try http://www.michna.com/download/wolgui.zip for a temporary
source. There's also a text mode utility, but I prefer the GUI
(Graphical User Interface) one.
