Wake from stand by with keyboard but not mouse?

J

J.Delage

All,

I would like my PC to only awake from stand by when I press a key on the
keyboard, but not when I move the mouse. The optical mouse is so sensitive
that each time someone walks into the room, that's enough to wake the PC. Is
there a way to select "only keyboard" for the wake?

Thanks.

Alternatively, is there a way to disable the mouse when the PC is in Stand
By? I went to Device Manager>Mouse but could not find any power related
settings.

Thx,

JD

That's the easy way. When the mouse isn't in use, park it upside down.

It happens that J.Delage formulated :

On my computer this can be configured in the BIOS setup.

My mouse emits an diabolical eerie red glow if I do that. If I were in
this position, I would keep a small patch of material (probably lint)
and sit the mouse on that. It should cure the problem, and your mouse
will probably have sweet dreams with a nice soft bed to lie on. :)

Klaus - thanks. Can you tell me under which heading this is? Also, how do I
access the BIOS?

Thanks,

Joss

J.Delage brought next idea :

access the BIOS?

I am using an Asus motherboard with an Award BIOS. Most Award BIOS
setup are accessed during power up by pressing the Delete key while
checking the memory. Others (Like HP) are using the F2 or F10 key
instead of the Delete key - they are usually displaying a small hint
during power up telling which key is used.

In an Award BIOS there is a tab named "Power" with a submenu called
"Power Up Control".

In that menu I can choose to enable/disable wake up on mouse, and if
keyboard is checked, which of a couple of predefined keys to use.

Branded computers like HP, Dell etc. usually have a very different BIOS
setup structure, sometimes with only basic setup options, so your
computer might not have that option.

I'm looking for something a little bit more elegant, if it exists... :)

Your choice, of course, but my suggestion is very easy to use.
Moreover, turning the mouse on or off is likely to be *much* faster
than any "more elegant" way, if you find one.

A colleague had the option to wake on sound being detected by the
microphone. He used to impress visitors by taking them into his study
and saying "Computer!". Best said with a Kirk/Scotty accent.
Of course, he could equally well have just clapped his hands, but the
effect wasn't so impressive.
