W2K/XP Pro loses DNS/DHCP

I am seeing a problem similar to several others posted in
the DNS and Networking groups. Basically, DNS/DHCP appear
to have stopped working on my MS-W2K Pro laptop.

I was on a road trip and consistently logged in to
Earthlink via dialup for about 10 straight days. Return
to office and laptop was unable to recognize 100baseT LAN
via PCMCIA card FE574 3Com 10/100bT. After a while the
dialup also failed to recognize networks. Both dialup and
LAN status dialogs show connection with packet traffic.
Can ping to gateway and external ip address however not to
host names.

Tried hard coding DNS servers in LAN connection setup.
Dialup was always DHCP with dynamic DNS - can establish
connection and watch packets go across however cannot get
email or other use out of it. Can ping all the DNS
servers in my list by typing IP address but cannot use
domain names.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling both modem and LAN
card.

No errors related to networking appear in the Event Viewer.
ipconfig /all

You seem to be pointing to yourself for the primary DNS server. i.e. Your IP
address is 192.168.1.50 and your Primary DNS server is also 192.168.1.50.

I believe I tried that based on a Microsoft Knowledge base
article. Regardless, it makes no difference to change the
Primary DNS address to a different, valid, DNS address.
Also, hosts, lmhosts, etc are all empty except for the
localhost at 127.0.0.1

Unless your laptop is hosting a DNS server this will not make any difference
so change your DNS entries to point only to your DNS servers.
Don't worry about hosts and lmhosts, they are supposed to look like that.
