DNS Update Failed

Hi all,

This problem has been been posted before, but I have not found a clear fire
way on fixing it.

I have a simple domain 1 forest, 1 domain 2 domain controllers.

DNS runs as DDNS.

DHCP serves addresses properly.

However I get the ever famous DNS Update Failed in my DHCP server logs.

all other aspects of DNS seem to work. I'll post my ipconfig /all from my
DC to begin with, but any other suggestions or things you need posted, please
ask.

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : pdns
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : whitmont.com
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : whitmont.com

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0B-DB-96-0C-0A
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.10.21
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.128
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.10.2
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.10.21
192.168.27.21
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

Can anyone make any suggestions? Oh.. and we don't use WINS at all, DNS is
our only connection method.

Windows 2000 or Win2k3?
Is DHCP on a DC?

Windows 2003 SP1 and yes DHCP is on a domain controller.

You will need to assign a dedicated user account in DHCP (On the server
properties sheet, Advanced tab) for the DHCP server to authenticate with the
DNS server.

Let me give that a shot!

That didn't help. we still have tons of lines of DNS Update Failed Errors in
the logs.

What else can I try?

What do you have defined in option 015?

What DNS server IPs are listed in the DHCP server's IP properties?

I have the same problem. "DNS update failed". But after I shut down
DHCP server and turn it on manually, the problem disappears. I have to
do that each time after restarting a Server.

That shouldn't happen if all is configured properly. Since we are not aware
of your configuration, it would be difficult to make an accurate guess as to
why it's happening.

If you can post some info, that would surely lead to a better diagnosis:

1. Unedited ipconfig /all from your DC, your DHCP server and one of a client
please
2. The exact zone name spellng in DNS and whether updates are allowed on the
zone.
3. The AD DNS domain name as it shows up in ADUC.
4. If the SRV records exist under your zone.

Thanks,

Ace

Thanks Paul. And you know what, pardon me, I apologize, because I see that
you originally posted this early on. Sorry for the repeat request.

You originally said you have two DCs. Is 192.168.27.12 the other DC? Is that
at another location?

About #4 - The SRV records are those folder records under the zone that are
called _sites, _tcp, _dp, _msdcs.

Is DHCP still giving you errors? Which machine is that, this DC that was
posted, or the other one? Can you post the DHCP log please? I assume you
tried what Kevin mentioned.

I assume that in your DHCP scope, 192.168.10.21 is set as the DNS address
for Option 006, at least at this location. Does the subnet mask in the scope
match this server's subnet mask?

Yes.. DHCP Client is running on the DHCP server.

Is the DHCP server Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003?
