W2k/W2k3 Backup

Hi!

Man, do I miss the time when you could backup the NT4 server with
ntbackup.exe ( don't get me wrong!! That's about the only thing I miss about
NT4!!!). The application was quite crappy, but if you had a singel server
with some kind of tape drive, the backup did just what you told it to do.

But, this is a bad application that MS really managed to make even
worse....!!!! Now, when the have implemented some kind of intelligence
(??!!????) by adding the rsm to the system, an unattended, scripted backup
isn't as simple to create as in the old days.

Sorry, had to get that one off my chest!

Does anyone have templates of WORKING command files, which would do the
following thing: Full backup once a week, Differential backup the rest of
the week nights, appended to the full backup tape?

I've been browsing the web searching for hints, but no luck.

Thanks, guys!!

What problems do you have with the RSM?

Usually the only entry in the backup.log is:
The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found.

Is there any way to "go around" the media management and simply use the tape
that is inserted in the tapedrive?

This is possible with the "/UM" switch. You must use this switch with
"/P"(=Poolname).

It's all documented in ntbackup help.

Yep, works fine when you make a full backup every night to different tapes.
But /um -switch won't do no good when first making a full backup to a tape,
then appending differential backups to the same tape (maybe I'm wrong....?).

But, I think I'll use a Legato Networker Storage Node instead. That way I
can manage the backups/restores from the same management console as for all
the other servers.

Thanks though....
