W2K server roles

Hello Tester,

No you can't, because W2000 does not support the PDC/BDC in NT4. W2000 uses
Active directory with FSMO roles. By the way, i suggest to upgrade to W2003
not W2000, the support is more or less over.
If you will upgrade the domain start here:

There is no such thing as a Win 2k BDC.

In order to add a Win 2k server to a NT 4.0 domain you would have to do it
as a member server or upgrade your existing PDC to Win 2k.

You could remove Win 2k from the new server and install NT 4.0 on it as a
BDC while connected to your existing domain, let it replicate, then promote
to PDC and upgrade to Win 2k and AD.

Hi there,
Can I set up an W2K server as PDC or BDC on an NT4 domain network?
I am thinking into moving out of NT4 server machines.
Thanks a lot,
Calin

And just to add a bit more confusion, if you upgrade an NT4 PDC to
Windows 2000 Active Directory, you can still use your existing NT4 BDCs
as long as your Active Directory is in mixed mode. This is the easiest
way to upgrade a small network to W2K from NT4. Upgrade the PDC in
place. Then bring up a fresh W2K install, transfer the master roles from
the old upgraded PDC, demote and "un-join" the old one and then bring up
additional W2K DCs as required. Always have a backup plan and a way to
go back if the upgrade fails.
