w2k server clean startup

Is there anyway of getting my win2k box to perform a clean startup i.e. like safe mode but it does a clean plug and play of all the components

It will still load my SQL Server etc bt regonise video cards etc as the system boots

The reson why is that I have a box that refuses to boot and I'm sure its a dodgy driver somewhere

If it boots in safe mode I can presume the problem HAS to be hardware related

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS - just discard the drivers for the time being

Many thanks

If you can boot safe mode then uninstall the suspected driver from Device
Manager. The next normal boot the 'Found New Hardware' wizard starts at
which point you can specify to install the new driver you just downloaded.

The device isn't in device manager any more

I stupidly took the card out the machine before I uninstaled it

I'm sure its still trying to load it though

I can't think what else it could be?

To display hidden devices, non-Plug and Play devices, and devices not
attached to the computer (commonly known as "ghosted" or "phantom" devices)
From a command prompt;

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
then
start devmgmt.msc

Then, use Device Manager to remove or reconfigure these devices. Do not edit
the registry.

OK, I solved it although feel a bit dumb and was quite surprised by the resolution

I had plugged a USB mouse and keyboard into the server. This worked fine in Safe Mode so was masking the problem

There was a handy solution in Add\Remove hardware. If you go to uninstall a device there is a checkbox called "Show hidden devices". In there I had half a dozen references to HID keyboards and mice. Once these were removed - bingo server boots. I'm really suprised by this to be honest

I can't remember the last time a keyboad and mouse stopped a server from booting...
