Corrupted startup screen

D

Daniel CLEMENT

Hi,

I have garbage in my win2k startup screen (blue stripes, wrong colors...).
It happens every other startup or so, and in this case the startup almost
always fails, or I eventually get a black screen... (the 2nd startup is
generally OK).

Hardware tests work OK. I suspect a video driver problem. Am I guassing
correctly?

I tried to uninstall/reinstall the graphic card (either with newer, or older
driver). But It did not solve the problem. Win2k appears to "remember"
somehow the previous driver, and reuse it.

I don't know how I could cleanly ant thoroughtly suppress the drivers before
reinstalling them.

Dell Precision M50 laptop, w2k sp4, NVidia quadro4 500 graphics card.

TIA for any advice,

D

I agree the hardware may have failed and or driver corruption. Download the
correct driver from the manufacturer's web site, choose to update driver
through Device Manager, choose "Have Disk" and point to the recent download.

Thank you very much for your help, Dave.

I download and installed the latest Dell drivers. The date and version are
the same as before. I think my drivers were already up to date.

However, I still have my video problems. It's peculiar because once the
system is up, the video is perfect. It's only the startup...

Also, I've done the "thoruough" Dell hardware tests and the hardware
definitely looks OK.

I'd like to try and clean the system from any previously installed drivers,
but I wonder if it's possible without reinstalling everything.

Best regards,

If it's before windows starts then it would appear to be a hardware issue.

After more testing, it definitely looks like a hardware problem. I'm afraid
I'll have to replace (at least) the graphic card.

Thanks again for your support,
