W2K RIS for deploying XP Pro

D

DanaK

I knew things were going too smoothly. I've created my
prototype XP Pro workstation after setting up my RIS
server according to the description in Mark
Minasi's "Mastering W2K Server", 3rd ed., pp. 139 to 151.
The RIS server is authorized in DHCP and set to respond to
requests from clients.

As I was attempting to run riprep.exe I got the following
error: "The RIS server to which you are attempting to post
this installation does not contain the correct CD-based
image. The version of the CD-based image on the server
must match the version of the system you are attempting to
image [version 5.1, build 2600, lang. English]. Please
either select a different RIS server to post this
installation to or add the corresponding CD-based image to
the current RIS server."

Ok, prior to attempting to run riprep.exe I found that
there were some updates and hotfixes to the RIS utilities
so the version of riprep.exe I'm running is 5.1.3590.0
dated 11/19/2001. This is from the hotfix
Q313069_W2K_SPL_X86_EN.exe. I also have hotfixes for KB
articles 327536 and 308508 but I don't think those apply
to me as I'm already running SP4 on the RIS server which
should have incorporated hotfix Q327536... and the other
applies to creating a W2K Server image which doesn't apply
to me.

When I first installed the RIS service the first image I
installed from the CD WAS an XP Pro image since we have no
W2K Pro system on the network. I'm not sure it's in the
right location, though. It's located from the RIS share
\\<server_name>\REMINST\Setup\English\Images\XP.pro .
Could a non-default location be part of the problem? I
don't remember having a choice as to where this first
image was to be deposited but I don't remember any
problems with copying the I386 files to the server. Is
there another location I can move these installation files
to or how do I add another CD-based installation file
group onto the server?

I've backed up the original files under
REMINST\Admin\I386.

Thanks.

Hi,

When you apply the critical updates, if the ntoskrnl.exe version changes
then you will receive the error message about "missing cd..". You can apply
the patches that do not change that file. The location you selected is
fine, it doesn't matter.

After you have applied all the patches that are possible and riprep'd your
image, then you should choose a method to deploy the remaining hotfixes and
patches. There is the GuiRunOnce method:

"The RIS Server to Which You Are Attempting to Post This Installation..."
Error Message When You Use RIPREP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324573

There is the Command.txt method, using QCHAIN:

http://www.mvps.org/serverstuff/

You can deploy hotfixes using SUS:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sus/default.mspx

We use a combination of SUS and command.txt to get the job done.

I have no doubt that I've probably installed all of these
hotfixes. If it was offered in the Critical Updates it
was installed. I'll check out the procedure in KB324573
and apply it.

What I don't understand, however, is the fact that I'm
attempting to create a second discreet image that has
nothing to do with the original one I put on the server
when I first set up RIS. Is this just an internal quirk
that, hopefully, is fixed in W2K3 Server?

Thanks for your help.

No, the process is similar for 2000 & 2003, the SIS system uses the files
from the cd-based image so each RIPREP image doesn't need to use all the
cd-based files in every image. This makes for more efficient use of
storage. It also means that most of the cd-based files must match the image
files and the ntoskrnl is a way to check that the service pack versions are
the same.

That being said, 2003 is more efficient, as is Server 2000 SP3+.

I see. I know about the grovler's function, more or less,
but I was expecting the images to be stored more like a
collection of ghost images.

I didn't have time to try the suggestions today but I'll
be at the site again tomorrow. I'm a one man show taking
care of 10 school sites for my special-ed co-op.

Thanks.
