A long and sorry story . . .
Basically you threw away the keys to your car, without first creating a set
of spare keys. Moral: Always have at least two local admin accounts, and
lock the password for the second one away.
To reset your admin password, get a tool from here:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
Specify a blank password for starters, as it works best.
Note that your laptop lives a borrowed live. Sooner or later you will have
to reload parts of the operating system, or some of the software. At that
time you will need the installation CDs.

The computer was originally a company computer. When the company aquired
another company and relocated out of state, employees at a certain grade
level and above, not moving with the company, were allowed to keep their
computers as a perk. Some perk, a computer for the loss of your job. Anyway,
when the computers were originally given to the employees (for business use)
they had already been imaged, by the company's IT Dept, with all the
necessary software for the employee to do his/her job and we were given our
domain Userid and initial Pasword to log into Windows via the company's
domain. I've always logged on via the domain.
A year has gone by since I lost my job and I really did not use the
computer from work because I had my own personal laptop. Work's notebook
computer is a very good Dell system. My wife and I divorced and I wanted to
give my kids the Dell notebook to use since my laptop is coming with me.
Everything was working fine until I disabled the old network domain by
going through "My Network Places" and changing the option from 'use as a
business network computer' (or something like that) to 'use as a standalone
computer' (or something like that). Anyway, now the domain name no longer
appears in the Logon Screen but the Logon Screen still requires a Userid and
Password and I don't know the password for Windows. Without it, I cannot
gain access to the comptuer.
Since no one from the relocating company's IT Dept. went with the company,
there is no one at the company's new location who knows the answers. So, in
a nutshell, that's why I'm in need of outside assistance. Can you help?
