W2k install pgm can't find CD-RW using Msoft driver Win98

Any efforts to upgrade Win98 and/or clean install W2k from
CD and from install diskettes have failed on my IBM 560X
with aftermarket CD-RW (PC Card i/f via Windows-provided
driver).

Per the suggestion in the W2K setup newsgroup, I tried
starting from the Win98 boot diskette, but found
no 'i386' folder on my Win98 machine (upgraded from Win95)
to copy! So I could go no further with this methodology.

I also went to BOOTDISK.COM at IBM's suggestion, created a
4-floppy Win2K install set, but after loading all 4
floppies, the Win2k installation program could find no CD-
reader! My CD-RW connects via PC Card interface and under
Win98 it uses a Microsoft-provided driver, yet under Win2K
installation cannot detect it during the installation
process!

Fortunately I have my Win98 installation fully functional
once again, but I need to be able to have Win2k for my
daughter to use when she goes to college in two weeks,
because that is the minimum for the university to
support! Any suggestions on what other things I should
try to do?

You will need a Win9x startup disk, a Win9x driver for your CD-RW and
SMARTDRV.EXE.

Boot from the diskette, and ensure that your CD-RW works, then copy the
i386-folder from your CD to the hard disk. Load SMARTDRV. Then start WINNT
from within the i386-folder on your hard disk to install Win2000 without
using the CD.

The i386 folder is on your Windows 2000 CD.

Whilst running Windows '98, insert your Windows 2000 CD.
Windows 2000 will offer to upgrade your current installation.
Decline the offer.
Drag 'n' drop the i386 folder from your Windows 2000 CD to your C: drive.
When the copy is finished, boot from your Win '98 setup diskette.
Cancel any setup and get to a DOS prompt.

At the A:> prompt, enter the following commands.

C:
CD i386
Winnt

Follow the bouncing ball.
