Long distance friend - newbie - does not have sp2 but claims to be getting
updates from M.S. If sp2 install is bad she would be stuck.
Is she ok with xp w/o sp2 if she is getting updates?

I would venture to say, 'It depends'. The proper answer is that she should
install SP2 ASAP and fall back to a backup if things go wrong.

Thanx again; I guess I asked a subjective type question. I'll defer to her
but will dig a bit more before I do that.
I guess I was really asking is, "Are the updates she is getting w/o sp2 the
same as those with sp2 installed?"

If she does not have SP2 yet she is getting the updates up to SP2.
in other words Microsoft released a bunch of patches that were to be
installed before SP2 so the install of SP2 would go in with more success.
I have done the SP2 install with and without the updates, but it is best to
install all updates leading up to SP2 first.

No, the set is different. Many updates require SP2 to be installed.

Friend may well be getting updates, but as to whether SP2 is needed, that's
another story. If she has software or hardware that requires it, it's
needed.

SP2 will be one of the updates if it hasn't already arrived.
