VueScan+Epson 2450+Photo Prints ==> Vertical red bars?

First time I've had this happen.

Running an Epson 2450 with VueScan, scanning 8.5x11 sheets of paper.
Each sheet has 4 photos (approx 3.5" x 3.5") glued to it.

Detail in the photos is coming through, but over top of everything are these red
lines that go from the top of the page to the bottom of the page and are spaces
a couple cm apart.

Anybody been here?

Apparently not because taking VueScan out of the picture (?) by
closing it and
just hitting the scanner's 'Scan' button appears to invoke something
called
"Epson Twain 5" - which results in the same red lines if there are
photos
present.

OTOH, no lines if the scanner is empty and "Epson Twain 5" decides
that it's
line art.

Just a guess, did this anomaly appear after (too) wet cleaning of the
platen?
If so, the cleaner could have seeped under the top edge and
contaminated the calibration strip. That would require opening the
scanner and trying to clean/replace that strip.

If you scan as line art, the contrast is increased so faint
discoloration doesn't show.

Upon further inspection... If I open up the saved image via ThumbsPlus and zoom
on the image, the bars go away at certain magnifications - but not others.

OTOH, in PhotoShop the bars never go away with zooming but change in size -
aggregating into larger bars sometimes.

Some kind of moire effect?

I take that back. They just become sufficiently faint that I didn't notice
them at first glance.

Oops, just did the obvious and ran a scan with nothing in the scanner.

Same red lines.

Something with VueScan? Scanner on the way out?

Per Bart van der Wolf:
Just to make sure, do the lines run in the direction of scan-head
travel, or perpendicular to that?

Same direction. i.e. The lines run from top to bottom of the page and the scan
head also moves from top to bottom.

That looks like a serious issue, nothing to do with the calibration
:-(
It looks too regular to me to indicate scan-assembly gear issues but
who knows, it might still be?

Ay yi yi.

Whatever direction the lines are running relative to the scan head, this
looks like the scanner is just plain broken. I can think of a few things
that could cause these lines, but I don't know what one might do through
software to fix this problem and it would probably be cheaper to replace
it than to service it.

The streaks definitely aren't caused from contamination. Cleaning the
optical path wouldn't affect the images here. Rather, the lines appear
to be electrical. Possibly EMF or some kind of electrical noise. It
appears that either one of the sheilding components from the optics is
bad or possibly the inverter board.

either case, you may want to consider another scanner or an RMA if it's
still under warranty. repair probably wouldn't be cost effective....

( did you eliminate the host pc environment as a variable? It's
possible that the controller inside your pc may cause this... (although
rare) but, it's easy to find out: install the drivers on another PC
altogether and test the scanner...

hope this helps

The local CompUSA had an Epson 4000-something on "Managers Special" couple days
ago, maybe it's time to take a break and go see if it's sold yet...
