VS External Device tools. Can't connect.

Visual Studio will start up an emulator (PocketPC 2003) fine. I can debug on
it too, but no way can I get any of the external device tools under
"C:\Program Files\Windows CE Tools\Common\Platman\bin\wce420" to work on it.
If I run "Connect Emulator to Active Sync" application, after a while I get
the error message "Critical communications services have failed to start.
Try resetting the mobile device and then connect again"
I get the error message "The Emulator Startup Server reported the following
error: Unable to establish a connection with the device. Please check server
configuration settings"
If I run Windows CE Platform Manager Configuration and press the "Test"
button on any option I also get this error message.
I've several platforms/emulators installed
ActiveSync works fine.
XP firewall is turned off, Ive no other running. Corporate Symantec
antivirus is running.
In Emulation Configuration Settings Ethernet = NAT outgoing.
Serial1/serial2/lpt = none.

Any ideas please

The communication streams for a device based on Windows CE 4.2 and earlier
are *not* the same streams used to connect VS.NET to the device. The VS.NET
connection is created using Connection Manager, while the 4.2 remote tools
are based on Platform Manager. I'm not aware of a work-around for this.

What are you trying to do, specifically? The real device should be able to
connect both to VS.NET and the remote tools, if you connect it via
ActiveSync.
