VPN to Windows 2003 - ping not OK server to remote clients but not

Hello everyone,

Hello

I have setup a VPN server (W2003), and few remote clients to access to the server (W2K).
From a remote client : I can connect to the server and also be able to ping from remote client to the VPN server either by name or by IP. But that is just about all I can do, I went to network places, trying to look for some other network groups and do some drive mapping to my remote client but there is nothing there other than my own network at home to map to.

From the VPN server: Inside the Remote Access, under clients, I can see active clients logged on to the server right there with IP address auto assigned, and again that's about all I can see. However I cannot ping from server to remote client neither by IP nor by computer name

I'm not really sure what else need to be done to get it working properly
Thanks

Thanks very much

Browsing in VPN

To locate Master Browsers and resolve NetBIOS names of hosts that are on a
separate subnet from the client, you need to add WINS on the VPN client. For
the small network or peer to peer network, you may want to to create LMHOSTS
on the VPN client. If you cannot browse remote network on My Network Places
even you have created LMHOSTS, make sure the browse masters are listed in
the LMHOSTS file.

Thanks for the reply and will try as suggested, but I must say adding Wins
and Lmhosts is not something that an averge user can do, and I can't go to
all of employees homes to setup this fo rthem so eally, it's not the answer
that I was hoping for thansk anyway

I'm trying to set up VPN with Windows 2003 server, and it looks like I'm
almost there

From remote Client:
1. I can ping the Server, either by name or IP address
2. However, I cannot see the server anywhere in the 'Network places'

From Server:
1. I cannot ping the remote client, neither by name nor by IP address
2. I don't see the remote client anywhere in the 'Network places'
3. Event Viewer, however said the connection is there and everything is OK,
here is the information inside Event Viewer:

The user TTT\User1 has connected and has been sucessfully authenticated on
port VPN5-126. Data sent and received over this line is strongly encrypted.
The user TTT\User1 logon connected on port VPN5-126 has been assigined
address 169.254.85.102

Again, I did check all the possible setting on the server side under Routing
& Remote Access, and couln't see anything obvious that I can change to make
this work. I must have missed something, but not sure what it is yet, please
anyone have any suggestions, woudl be greatly appreciated

Thanks

You will not be able to see the LAN machines if your remote client is
receiving a 169.254 address. This suggests to me that your RRAS server is
using the default option (obtain IP addresses from DHCP) but DHCP cannot be
contacted.

Try using a static pool of addresses for the remotes. For example use
the high end (say 230 to 250) of your LAN subnet.
