VPN sees only Shared Folders

I'm having a persistent issue with my attempt to set up a VPN
connection to our small office.

What I need to do.... I need to see the files that reside on a Linux
file-server at the office.

What I set up.... I made one of the XP Machines at the office a VPN
Server. This machine has access to the Linux File Server, so I expect
that my VPN Client (at home) should be able to see all the resources
of the VPN Server, including the mapped drive of the Linux File
Server.

The Problem... The only resources I can see over my VPN connection are
the ones which the XP-VPN-Server has ear-marked as "shared". If it's
not a shared resource, I can't see it via VPN. (I would simply make
the File-Server's mapped drive "shared" but XP will not allow that.)

I have attempted to simplify the problem in the following way; I
eliminated all the routers & even the Internet connection. I went to
the office & right there on the LAN, I made one other machine a act as
a VPN client to the VPN server just one door away. The result is the
same.... I only see the shared resources of the VPN Server.

Thoughts?

Yea, I figured out I can ping it. Further more, I can also get
access to it's files by putting the ip-based format into an Explorer
address bar.. (as in...\\192.169.0.153\public). So I guess it's
clear the the issue has to do with the VPN client not being able to
reslove the name.

In the mean time, I can use that IP address scheme to get at the files
& even map the drive.

What does it take for the VPN client to be able to see the Linux
Server via it's name?

If the DNS doesn't take care of name resolution, you may want to use
mlhosts. Or this search result may help.

Can use ip but no name(Note: Alternatively, you can use mlhosts or FQDS).
