VPN problems between two XP Pro machines, hosted by same ISP

Hello

I have read several web pages, and consulted the MS KB, to try to resolve a
problem my friend and I are having. Can anyone point me towards a
*detailed* idiot's guide to VPN please?

We want to establish a VPN between his home network and mine - we both have
Wi-Fi connecting a couple of machines together at our respective houses, and
we both have ADSL provided from the same ISP which gives us both static IP
addresses.

I am running DHCP here, so that my main machine dishes out an IP address to
my secondary machine ( I am using a Wi-Fi access point to connect to a
laptop, so that the aptopgets internet access served to it from the main
machine i.e. ICS is switched on).

My mate has the same sort of setup except he's got a Wi-Fi ADSL router - the
router has its static IP set as per the ISPs settings.

The trouble is, every time I connect to him (me the client, he's the host)
or vice versa, we always get "error 678 - the connection was terminated by
the remote computer before it could be completed".

So, the immediate questions are:

1) What settings should we be using for the TCP/IP protocols within the VPN
network connection ( I know the target IPs that we are both trying to reach,
but what about the internal IPs of our Wi-Fi networks).

2) What do we do about DNS details?

3) What do we do about Windows logon details (his network name/my network
name)?

Please can anyone comment here or point me towards a suitably explicit
website (steady - not THAT sort of explicit web site)

Thanks for any advice
