I am working on a VPN configuration problem on a Windows Vista Home Premium
system. I am able to configure the connector and get it to work, but I
cannot locate a link to the connector to use it a second time. The
connector still exists, because a different name has to be used if I create
another one. The link does not appear in "Manage network connections" in
the "Network and Sharing Center", as it does on a Windows Vista Business
system.

Anyone have an idead of where this link can be found in this version of
Vista? Thanks!

Hi Ellis,

I'm not sure how you do it through the GUI; but if you run the command
"rasphone", it will bring up the Network Connections dialogue, with your VPN
entry in the drop-down list.

You can also run "rasphone <entry> to connect to a specific entry; eg
"rasphone MyVPN".

You can also create a shortcut containg the rasphone command with desired
parameters, to provide a convenient icon for the command.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for your response. It hasn't fixed the problem, but has certainly
given me some clues to work with.

While rasphone works fine on my Vista Business system, on my customer's
Vista Home Premium system we get "Remote Access Phonebook has stopped
working." When I researched that, I found it was blocked by DEP, and when I
tried to remove it from DEP we get "This program must run with data
execution protection (DEP) enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this
program."

Hi Ellis,

Well, that part has me flumoxed. Rasphone should certainly work on Vista
Home Premium - I set up a test connection on a Home Premium machine here;
and it worked okay. So (as far as I know) there's no fundamental reason your
customer can't use a dial-up or VPN connection - except for the DEP error
they get, which seems to be some kind of malfunction on that specific
machine.

Right now I have no idea why Rasphone would generate such an error. Best I
can suggest is that, there may be a corrupt phonebook. Back up the user's
*.pbk file, then delete the original and re-create the VPN entry from
scratch. See if you still get a DEP error. If you do ... well, that's very
weird. I would just flatten the box and re-install Vista from scratch;
hunting down the root cause and fixing it, could take far longer.

Good luck!
