VPN issue

I have a computer with WinXP SP1 and a dedicated internet connection
(puiblic IP). The same for my friend, but he has WinXP SP2.

We tried making a VPN.
First problem: when he sets-up the server, I can successfully login.
When I setup the server, he cannot connect.

Second problem: when I connect, I cannot see his computer in My Network
Places (even though both computers are set with the same workgroup). We
both activated NetBios over TCP/IP (I activated it in my VPN connection
and Local Area Network (LAN) adapter (Networking tab), my friend only
in his LAN adapter (Networking tab).

I can search his computer by name, and I am able to find it and access
his shares (I guess it is normal, because when I login, I use a user /
pass combination active on his computer).

My friend can only search (and founds) my computer, but cannot connect
(access denied message). Typeing a "net view \\my_computer_name"
command also result in failure.

I think the problems (he cannot connect to my VPN server or connect to
my computer and see the shares are related.

Please help.

I didn't install SP2 because it freezes during installation.
I checked the started services and I matched his started services with
mine.
There are no firewalls active.

Thx.

1. what's the error code? if you fin dthe error code check this page for troubleshooting, http://www.chicagotech.net/raserrors.htm
2. it could be the master browser issue.
3. it could be permission or cached credentails issue. for 2 and 3, check this page, http://howtonetworking.com/VPN/browsingovervpn0.htm

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

I recommend Brinkster for web hosting!

I don't know the error code: the logon problem is that when I setup the
server and my friend tries to connect, he is repeatedly asked for a
user / pass / domain combination. The user / password used for
authentication are valid on my computer (I set it up when I installed
the VPN server).

When his computer is the server and I connect, I can see his shares.
When he tries to see mines (net view \\citro - citro is my computer
name), he gets "access denied" (no error number AFAIK)
