VPN error while registering computer on network

I have been working a particularily annoying issue with
W2K RRAS for a couple days now and am in need of some
guidance. My particulars:

1. W2K VPN running PPTP in the DMZ
2. Clients in remote locations running W2K and XPPro
3. Clients attempt connection, they establish connection,
they authenticate, then they hang on the "registering your
computer on the network" phase.
4. RRAS shows them as connected while they are in this
suspended animation state.
5. If I attempt to connect to VPN from a machine in the
intranet, it works fine.
6. Remote machines CAN telnet to VPN WAN IP 1723
7. Remote machines CANNOT ping VPN WAN IP

Anything else I left out, I would be happy to provide.
Plus if you live near San Jose, CA, I will buy you a beer.

Are there any events of interest in the event log at the client or the
server when the VPN hangs?

Well, after trying everything I could think of, I rebuilt the whole server from scratch just to be sure I was started from a clean slate. The server had a history of viruses, file corruption, error msgs/events and I wanted to eliminate all that. After I did all that, I hooked it back up and same issue: hang on registering the computer. I left it for some time (had to run out) and when I came back, low and behold, it working. Go figure

Bottom line: I think I will try to keep this server ultra-clean and back up System state on a regular basis

Thank you
